Miss Universe pageant

By this morning you might be reading the results announced of the Miss Universe pageant 2004. For all those who watched it live like me, because I had nothing better to do that evening US central time, questions of the credibility of the pageant and its sponsors seems inevitable. From the start the show was exclusively broadcasted to its claimed 6 million viewers by NBC, a channel owned and operated by American multinational GE. GE with its operations from alarm clocks, refrigerator to aero engines and air force systems (where the big money is) had a fortune change with a war based on fiction and executed by sheer blood, flesh and gunpowder. The engagement of its largest customer the US department of defense can be inextricably linked to the a event almost a year later, televised from Ecuador and hosted with aplomb and gaiety that lacked real substance, original thought and diversity in its content.

The producer of the Miss Universe pageant is real estate mogul Donald Trump , whose wealth accumulation is based on a business model that neither requires global outlook, expertise or knowledge. With low interests, a taut legal system and rental laws it does not take the expertise of a rocket scientist to pile wealth and multiply it. Does it come as a surprise to you that his reality TV show winner was handed the post of a judge at the Miss Universe pageant, when about 3 months back he was struggling fitting in his pants with other participants, who were equally lacking imagination or originality. Do you think Donald Trump is smarter your neighborhood real estate agent? Well, why ask such a stupid question. Then, can one answer what a real estate agent turned media owner doing with an international beauty pageant. Some might question my disregard for Donald trump’s ingenuity, but I attribute his success to the American climate for entrepreneurs. Being in India oblivious to this reality, we scrub, clean and polish the brightest and beautiful young minds to compete in a pageant that has the entire recipe for sleaze and sham.

Ecuador as well as many South American countries are doomed to being administered this brand of entertainment by their adoption of a democracy à la American style. So, when you look closely at the finalists at the pageant it comes as no surprise that 4 out of the 5 finalists were from the Americas. Further, the deserving winner was far away from down under Australia. But again, Australia did share contribution to American fiction staged about a year back and so the final results will always be a question of suspect in many minds. A European participation was distinctly absent in the pageant and that definitely could be well explained if seen in the context of the current American engagement across the globe and European reluctance to it.

Lastly, the days of real news are gone and everyone who understands the tragedy of capitalist media power will always be unconvinced about the truth that the networks claim in their content that is shown between the continual deluges of commercials. Further, the credibility of NBC is at question not only I had certain notions about the network, but because NBC broadcasted a biased view of the war with its “embedded journalists” who brought us a picture, which now we know was well crafted. The tragedy of such a media event conducted by faux pas and faux puppetry is it undermines the scores of brilliant young beautiful women who traveled across the globe to participate. The circumstances revealed in no way seek to diminish the performance of ones who made and who won it. It just reconfirms what a magnanimous trick the Miss Universe pageant could becomes when lies is being fed to the world in utter divide.
