A street of dazzling diversity

About 8 years back , I was looking at the exhibits vying for student trophies in Mumbai for NASA ( an relatively unheard of acronym for National Association of Schools of Architecture) and among the exhibits what caught my eye was the Louis Kahn trophy entry. The Louis Kahn trophy is given to the extensive and accurate documentation of a historical site/project with significance current information of its context and use. The entry which caught my attention was study of the Bhuleshwar area of Mumbai. The area has about 800 temples on one single street and people speaking 18 major languages and about 50 different dialects reside in the Bhuleshwar area. A population close to a million people live in the Bhuleshwar area.
Bhuleshwar is a paradise for shoppers and its narrow by-lanes are overflowing with tourists, people, animals, handcarts, occasionally a yellow and black mumbai taxi honking its way through the traffic. There is a magic of small shops of every size that sells products imaginable at affordable prices. The spirit of the shopkeepers is captivating who zealously attempt to sell their goods by shouting of their wares at the top of their voices and bargaining down their prices to the delight of the veteran shoppers. This is what Mumbai is famous for, the heady mix of hustler shopkeepers and hustling shoppers. For a new shopper, its a attack on the senses and sensibility.
Bhuleshwar is know for colourful glass bangles, saris, cheap accessories for women, but the Prime attraction of this Market is the famous Mumbadevi temple. Bhuleshwar market dazzles in the renowned and popular Zaveri Bazaar or the jewelery Market. You can find beautiful gold and silver jewelery crafted in almost every design imaginable. The Bhuleshwar market also sizzles with delicious fragrances, which come from the several small stalls that sell scrumptious snacks and beverages.

The Bhuleshwar market is a complex reality of market, people, diversity all jostling in the needs of business, religion and daily living.
